3D Printed Titanium Subperiosteal Implant
What Is a Subperiosteal Implant?
On top of the bone. Not inside it.
A subperiosteal implant is fundamentally different from a conventional dental implant. Rather than being placed inside the jaw bone like a root, a subperiosteal implant sits on top of the bone — secured with screws that anchor into the bone surface. It is like a sheet or a net of 3D printed titanium that intimately follows the contours and anatomy of a patient’s lower jaw.
This makes subperiosteal implants ideal for patients with severe bone loss who cannot receive conventional implants — including patients with severely atrophied lower jaws where there is simply not enough volume of bone to place a standard implant post.
"A custom 3D printed titanium net — designed from your CT scan, conforming precisely to the unique anatomy of your lower jaw. No bone required."
- Sits on top of the bone — secured with screws into the bone surface
- Does not require bone volume sufficient for conventional implant placement
- Custom 3D printed titanium follows the exact contours of your lower jaw
- Designed directly from your CT scan — no physical impression surgery required
- Dramatically less invasive than historical subperiosteal techniques

A Historic First
First in the United States.
In 2023, Dr. Chris Winterholler performed the first 3D-printed digital subperiosteal implant in the United States — a landmark procedure that opened a new chapter in implant dentistry for patients with the most severe bone loss.
Since that first case, Dr. Chris has gone on to place many others, building expertise that very few implant dentists in the country possess. He is one of only a handful of providers who can handle these minimal bone cases with this level of precision and technology.
- Performed the first 3D-printed digital subperiosteal implant in the US — 2023
- Has since placed multiple cases — growing expertise in this rare technique
- One of the very few implant dentists in the country offering this solution
- Expert in all minimal bone cases - zygomatic, pterygoid, custom & subperiosteal
- If you have been told there is no hope — Dr. Chris may have the answer

Same-Day Loading
New teeth. The same day.
The digital subperiosteal implant can be loaded immediately — the very day of surgery. The implant is placed, sutures are carefully positioned around it, and the restoration is delivered that same day. This is made possible entirely by the digital workflow.
Because everything has been planned and fabricated in advance from the CT scan — the implant frame, the restoration, and the delivery protocol — everything is ready and waiting when the patient arrives for surgery. While the patient rests and recovers from the procedure, our team fabricates the final hybrid All-on-X restoration in our in-house laboratory.
The restoration itself is also 3D printed — custom stained and characterized to create beautiful, lifelike new teeth that are fitted and delivered the same day the implant is placed.
"One surgery. Implant placed. Sutures set. New teeth fitted — all while you rest. You leave with a smile."
- Implant placed and sutures set in a single surgical appointment
- Hybrid All-on-X restoration fabricated same day while patient rests
- Restoration is 3D printed — custom stained and characterized for natural beauty
- Immediately loaded — no waiting weeks for a temporary appliance
- Patient leaves with a complete, beautiful, functional smile the same day

Advanced Surgical Technique
Inferior Alveolar Nerve Lateralization
Moving the nerve. Opening the door to implants.
We are one of the very few offices in Arizona with the experience and training to perform inferior alveolar nerve lateralization — a precise surgical technique that temporarily repositions the inferior alveolar nerve, allowing us to place conventional implants in patients who have lost most of their lower jaw bone.
In patients with severe bone loss, the inferior alveolar nerve often runs at or very near the surface of what little bone remains. Its position intimidates — and in many cases prevents — other providers from offering any implant solution at all. By carefully lateralizing the nerve, Dr. Chris creates the space needed to place implants safely and predictably, even in the most challenging lower jaw cases.
"The nerve that stops other providers from helping you doesn't have to stop us. We move it — safely — so we can give you the implants you need."
- One of the very few offices in Arizona trained in nerve lateralization
- Allows conventional implant placement where nerve position would otherwise prevent it
- Enables implants for patients with severe lower jaw bone loss
- Can be combined with Panthera custom implants or subperiosteal implants when needed
- If you've been told implants aren't possible — come see Dr. Chris for a second opinion
